WCS Kenya Marine Program supports area-based conservation by working with government agencies, local communities, and stakeholders to establish and strengthen MPAs, LMMAs (locally known as “Tengefu”), and mangrove forests protection. These efforts help protect critical habitats, sustain fisheries, and enhance climate resilience.
WCS Kenya Marine Program works to ensure that Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures (OECMs) are equitably established, well-resourced, and effectively managed along the Kenyan coast.
Through research, capacity building, and community engagement, we develop innovative, participatory management approaches to protect marine and coastal habitats. Our efforts focus on enhancing spatial conservation strategies, strengthening local and regional conservation capacity, and raising awareness about the importance of MPAs and OECMs in sustaining marine biodiversity and livelihoods.
