Cetaceans including humpback whales are important species within our oceans, yet little is known about their movements and threats. The WCS Kenya Marine Program employs a science based and collaborative approach focusing on understanding the opportunities and threats for humpback whale species conservation.
WCS Kenya Marine Program collects data on the migratory behavior of East African humpback whales to enhance conservation efforts. In partnership with the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), the program conducts satellite tagging to gather critical insights into the temporal and spatial distribution of humpback whales in the Malindi-Watamu region, a key part of Kenya’s coastal marine ecosystem. This research informs strategies for improving whale conservation and marine biodiversity protection.
